Biography
Dr Ing. Giancarlo CARATTI is currently Head for Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer at the European Commission, DG Joint Research Centre, a Unit which manages the Intellectual Property of the European Commission and promotes the uptake on new technologies via technology transfer. In 2015 has was Deputy Commissioner General for the EU participation in the World Expo Milano 2015, as appointed by the President of the European Commission, and leading the EU Expo 2015 Task Force, which coordinated the participation of the EU institutions in the Expo.
In his previous assignments, Mr Caratti managed other DG JRC departments, namely: “Institutional and International Relations”, “Enlargement” and “Policy Support Strategy”. Mr Caratti has started his career in the European Commission in 1986 within the unit “Renewable Energy R&D”. In 1996 he was appointed Advisor to the Director of the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies in charge of coordination of the scientific work programme and stakeholder relations.
Mr Caratti’s educational background is in Mechanical Engineering, with specialisation in Energy. Before joining the Commission he worked in the Faculties of Engineering of Florence (1982) and Pisa (1984-1985), teaching and researching on Industrial Systems and Energetics. In 1983 he spent one year as visiting scholar at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA in the field of Energy Modelling. In 1985 and 1986, he worked as project engineer at Techint, Italy’s largest private engineering company based in Milan. Mr Caratti has over 60 publications in international conferences, journals, etc. and is editor of various technical books.
